Robert,

I have had success making SL3D lenses out of the early version Canon EOS
50mm/1.8 lenses, in the manner you describe (which was discussed on this
list some time ago). In fact I made two versions, one for horizontal
format and one for vertical format prints. The great thing about the
vertical format modification is that it doesn't interfere with the
camera's ability to auto-focus, so it's great for rapidly-moving
subjects (in the horizontal format, the electronics inside the camera
get confused).

The f/1.8 aperture is great because the effect is more pronounced as
depth of field diminishes. And, the outer lens group doesn't rotate
as the focus changes, so the red/blue filters retain proper orientation
during focusing (I glued the filters to the rear retaining ring on the
front group). And, these lenses are easy to take apart (at least for
the sake of this modification :-). And, they are still relatively cheap!

I tried this as an experiment, since the Vivitar Q-DOS lens doesn't fit
Canon EOS (and isn't an AF lens, anyway). I was successful, but I doubt
I'll ever use these lenses for anything other than party pics.
