There used to exist a New York Canal club or society. You might try and find
them. Also, a search using Alta Vista on the WWW with the key words *New
York Canal Society* returns several hits that might be worth persuing.
It seems to me I remember that a member of that canal society told me once
that there were over 3000 miles of canals in New York. Amazing.
