That seems mindlessly restrictive! A number of award-winning slides in the
Stereo Club of Southern California competitions have objects "in front of" the
window--some really spectacular effects can be achieved that way. You just have
to be careful how you use it, to avoid the old "disembodied torso" effect. There
are so many problems that can arise, a lot of the more conservative mounters
advise not to break the window, but as my old cinematography teacher at USC
always said, the rules are made to be broken--just be damned sure you KNOW the
rule and WHY you're breaking it!
