TDC Colorist II Rangefinder Problem

Just got a nice TDC Colorist II which has one problem. The rangefinder which is 
built into the viewfinder does not work, that is, I do not see the second image. 
When the camera is shaken, there is a suspicious rattle in the top of the camera 
which I suspect is a part of the rangefinder that has come lose.

I'm looking for someone familiar with the insides of the Colorist who can tell 
me if it's safe for me to take a crack at repairing it myself. Does the top come 
off easily? Are there any parts that might fly out when opened? Please respond 
by E-Mail if you have any suggestions or warnings.
