|I believe one of the unsubs was from a person who claimed that it was his
|roommate who subscribed him. While that doesn't make it a spam, I was
|just trying to encourage a little tolerance for the less net-savvy people
|out there. Like, what does it cost you to delete those messages?
|

One thing to consider is the load on *my* end when someone quotes
an entire digest to add one or two lines at the bottom. This does a
couple of things...

1. It mails a digest length message to EVERYONE on the list (approaching
1,000 subscribers now). For those on ACK, a typical message will be
about 3 k in length including headers. With a quoted digest, all ACK
people will get a message about 20K+ in length. Bad if you are paying
by the K or the minute to pick up your mail. Bad for me since it
causes the load average on our Unix machine and our overloaded fractional
T1 to go beserk. Bad since if we get too many undelivered messages or
bounced messages built up in the spool, we crash.

2. It mails a DOUBLE length digest on the next digest issue for people
in DIGEST mode - take all the bad things in point #1 above and DOUBLE
them!

If I ending up mailing an extra 20K of useless material to 1,000
subscribers... well, grab a calculator and do the math...

That's why *I* tend to be relatively non-tolerant of people who
ignore administrivia.

I have to agree, though, that the listserv commands which originated
in main frame and unix speak tend to be overwhelming to new network
users. There have been some good suggestions here and to me privately.
I think that I'll see if I can recruit one of our grad students (other
wise known as slave labor) when the fall term begins to put together
a WWW page to generate the proper mail commands to interface with
the listsever on a GUI/menu type basis.

THANKS
