As an Acquisitions Librarian, I would interject that the price is not *too* out of 
line with numerous hard bound reference volumes I buy on a regular basis.  The 
price is often determined (especially for *special interest* topics) by the 
expected break-even point for low sales of the production line.  Eventually, the 
price may be reduced after someone buys out the lot at a reduced price (i.e., a 
guaranteed sale).  

It is a curse...I often find myself wishing for the book to either do well enough 
that I can find it used or to do so poorly that they put it on discount right 
away.  

Kind of the same thing with 3-D cameras, viewers, etc...
