You can take them appart by prying the two halves with a screw driver. They
use metal push pins as joints in the four corners. Rotate one side of the pin
slightly when rejoining for a tight fit. Cleaning is also much easier when
they are in pieces. Don't forget to clean the plate, so you don't mark your
reels with dirt rings.

You found model "G" viewers.  Very common (hard to sell for $1.00).
As for the design change, no one "reely" knows, but that is just one of many
changes on the model "G", there are lots.
