As I've commented before, the Spacevision format of 3D projection, with two
half-frame images, one atop the other in a normal 35mm frame, does make 3D
presentation easier in some ways, however it is EXTREMELY prone to screw-ups in
a lot of other ways. The most common problem is that a careless splice or a
sloppy job of threading the film in the projector will cause the film to be two
sprockets out of synch, and not only will the left and right images be reversed,
but they won't even be from the same frame, causing the image to be both out of
synch and pseudo stereo. In fact, a projectionist has to work much harder to
screw up a two-strip 3D presentation than he does a single-strip one! Probably
the most idiot-proof system is the one in which two images are squeezed
horizontally, like a Cinemascope print, and placed side-by-side in a normal 35mm
frame--the only problem is that this produces an old-fashioned 3:4 image which
is fine for '50s reissues, but is out of step with current wide-screen
expectations.
