Hear, hear!  Let's not get caught up in names.  Much technological advance
involves the carrying over (or perhaps one should say generalizing) of older
vocabulary.  This is why a bicycle has a "saddle" and a car has a "trunk"
and a data stream has "carriage returns" and "line feeds."  It is a
convenient shorthand, and a useful device for drawing the very real
analogies that exist between platforms.  It is convention, that's all.

So perhaps they'll be called "digitally implemented virtual matte image
structures" - but I hope not.  Maybe I'm just PC-challenged?
