Dr.T will probable reply with the definitive answer, but in the
meantime, I'd recommend NOT using any mechanical polishing device on
plastic items, since it's so easy to burn or gouge the surface.
On old radios and other bakelite items, I use a product called
Simichrome, a paste-like polish often found at antiques stores and
automobile parts stores.  This is applied with a soft cloth, then
polished with a clean soft cloth, and gives a great finish without
removing too much of the surface.
