John Dukes offers:

There's little doubt that in our instant-gratification day and age,
prints are the preferred medium for most casual photographers. They're
much more easily portable than a projector, slide tray and screen, can
be passed around to multiple people, and people can look at each one as
long (or as little) as they wish.
A projectionist has to set up a screen and a projector, the angle of
good viewing is usually limited, people can't do much else during
the show since the lights are out, and your viewing time is at the
projectionist's whim. While this might be great for the projectionist,
it makes the audience captive to what might be awful photography.
Kodak tried to create a new presentation method to replace projection,
with Photo CD. Believe it or not, it was marketed mainly for the
consumer (practically everyone has a TV in their living room; just
hook up a PCD player and voila! instant slide show). In reality, the
opposite happened; many pros have adopted the format as a way of
archiving their work digitally. It's also a great way to get your
photos scanned at hi resolution if you don't have the equipment. But
consumers have pretty much ignored it.
Unfortunately, it is all but useless for 3D without adding polarizing
sheets, a mirror and a beamsplitter to the front of your TV. And if
you are going to do that, you might as well shoot video with a
beamsplitter.
