Various comments to various people:
Lincoln Kamm: How about letting the rest of us know the location of the
Strong Museum with the weird toys in case we're ever in the area and want to
check it out?
Various: I stand corrected re polarized vs. anaglyph film showings in the
'50s. Neil Harrington's suggestion that color 3D flicks were shown polarized
and b&w shown anaglyph certainly makes sense, though historical fact is
always better than theory, and apparently those facts exist.
I am moved, however, to post some recollections about the quote from
Halliwell posted by Greg Wageman about the "brief revival of interest in the
process
as a promotion gimmick for cheap pornographic films". I first saw The
Stewardesses in polarized 3D at a drive-in in Trevose, PA (alas, the Lincoln
Drive-In has been replaced by an apartment complex and office buildings), and
frankly, it wasn't a very interesting flick. The most vivid 3D image I recall
is of a Grecian statue in the foreground while Christina Hart, under the
influence of LSD, and her guy were making it in the background. (Hart went on
to become a mainstream actress of some note.) I also saw Prison Girls
(starring Uschi Digard) and Love in 3D (a German production) in regular
theaters in Lower Bucks County, PA, the latter film being much better, both
story-wise and 3D-wise, than the former, and both were polarized.
Which leads me to the question, what would prevent some entrepreneur from
running both left and right reels of a polarized 3D film through twin
projectors with the proper filters in place, recording the result on a third
reel of film and showing that for use with the proper polarized glasses? Is
there something about the process of polarization itself that prevents this?
On another topic, is there some reason the Nimslo or Nishika Opti-Lite flash
is unsuitable for taking photos with a Realist-type camera? I have both and
before I waste a roll of film experimenting, I thought I'd ask.
