I'm not ashamed to confess my ignorace of this "well known technology".
The mention in Halliwell's was the first I'd heard of it.  I don't recall
Russian autostereographic theatres being mentioned on this list since
I've been reading it.

Perhaps you'd care to elaborate on the process?  Or at least provide a
pointer to one of the "various books" so that the curious might investigate?
