>Yet again I hear another praising of the almighty Realist.
(and alot more)
Very eloquently said. You took the words out of my mouth and alot
more I could not have thought of. Here is my 2 cents on this matter.
You bring up very good points between the different formats.
As I have just recently been getting into 3d more actively I
realized that the Realist is the "standard". I was and still
am tempted to buy it but have resisted for many of the reasons
you have mentioned along with how hard it would be getting slides
or prints developed from local developers. For over a decade I
have lived happily with stepping side by side photography, pairing
single-use cameras ,my pentax stereoadaptor, and even was happy with
single-use 3D Magic lenticular cameras for taking regular 3d pics instead
of lenticulars. I have also recently bought the Loreo for the sole reason
that it can be developed at any photo developer along with the 3D Magic
camera. I also have used my video camera with a Pentax and side by side
snapshots using a Snappy. I thought long and hard about the Realist but
after seeing it here at a 2nd hand camera shop and at Rochester I'd rather
invest in a second SLR camera! Maybe the FED. As you see I prefer full
35mm and can crop them as you mentioned. So I am also puzzled by the fact
that many profess to wanting to buy the best viewers but balk at buying a
FED albeit I think it came out recently. This reminds me of some
audiophiles that buy the best name brand or esoteric stereo turntable,
CD player, amp and tuner and then skimp on the speakers and buy a no name
brand. I know alot of people will say yea but twin SLR's are inconvient
,so buy a FED and show your seriousness in the hobby and help support the
manufactures that are coming out with these products.
Further if somebody wants hi quality V-M viewers scrap all your commercial
ones, yes even the Model "D" and modify it by replacing the optics with
a Nikon 8X loupe. Its still cheaper than a Model "D" and if money is no
object check out Edmund Scientific and go all out. They have some beautiful
loupes that will make wonders from a V-M and for that matter you can also
change all your Realist, etc. viewers this way with a bit more work for the
seriously determined that is.

Agreed. I think thats what Sam Smith was trying to say.
