Actually, thoughts have gotten somewhat distorted by editing over the course of
the thread. The original comment concerned the fact that automatic
exposure/color correction is often thrown off by there being artifacts of more
than one image in the frame when half-frame pictures are printed. Someone else
said, "Well why don't they just use a half-frame mask?" and it was this comment
that I was responding to, with the idea that labs, particularly the quick 'n'
dirty ones, don't tool up for something they'll use maybe once in a lifetime.
They can't handle 620 film, either, in case you hadn't noticed. Any lab with any
kind of custom handling can easily print half-frame images using a full-frame
mask, of course, and I don't think the problem of reading being thrown off by
the excess image is probably as important or pervasive as it has been made to
sound, either. You only need to find a lab willing to take the extra time and
effort to handle a strange and non-standard situation.
