Lenticular processing ?

In the current issue of the Third Dimesion Society journal is a
small article stating that some people have had lenticular prints
developed in the UK (I assume thats the Widescreen Centre), that
have been of "poor" quality. A request was made as to if anyone had
had prints (from the same negatives) developed both in the USA and
the UK and had they noticed any difference in quality.

I certainly have had prints developed by ImageTech in the states and
by the Widescreen centre (before they had their own equipment, I
think they said they were sent to Amsterdam for processing..), the
quality of these have been good. They are certainly better that the
ones my friend Phil Palmer showed me the other night. these had been
developed by the Widescreen Centre and although I was impressed
with the actual medium (i.e. large flat prints, not small and
slightly curved like mine are..), the quality of the image was very
poor. We were unsure if this was a problem with the development or
the fact that they had been taken with a 3D Magic (..mine were with a
Wizard) , or indeed if the fact that the film was past its use by
date had caused the problem..

I thought maybe Tony from the Widescreen Centre would like to share a
bit about the process with us so that we can all make more informed
judgements.. Tony ?

I hope Tony is willing to share more, because although I understand
(I think!) in principle how the 3 images are optically interleaved
under the barrier and so give a stereo image, I still have some
unanswered questions...

The simple descriptions I have read always seem to imply that its a
fairly automated process, and yet there does seem some manual "setup"
for each print. What is this "setup", is it in some way setting the
infinity point or near point or something ???

Why do some prints just look too busy and are impossible to look at
without giving you a head ache ? The only thing I can think of is
maybe these shots are breaking the 1 in 30 rule..

Is it possible to have things pretrude through the lenticular screen,
i.e. through the window.. if so could this be specified when ordering
prints etc ?

If I put a close up lense (reading glasses..) in front and shoot
closer than the current limit.. what effect will this have on the
processing..?

Ohh and my last thought..

I have noticed that (and people often comment) that lenticulars very
often look very cardboard cutout. Someone on the list has stated
that cardboarding is an effect of poor resolution, this would
certainly be the case with a lenticular were the image resolution
has been reduced by two thirds (or three quaters) !!

My own experience points towards shooting relativley close subjects,
I probably restrict myself to a single main subject at about 10-15
feet, and looking for subjects that have some linear depth in them,
in an attempt to override the cardboarding effect. For example, I
have a shot that is of my sister, sitting on the floor, holding a
birthday in front of her at about half an arms length.I personally
think that although the framing is not brilliant the shot actually
works very well as it certainly looks 3D but blantent cardboarding..
