You might see depth, but isn't stereo, which by definition is based on the
detection of binocular disparity. In the situation you describe the
information is probably carried in the pattern of motion or displacement
recorded by a single eye.
It's an interesting phenomenon, anyways. I talked on the phone with
someone on the list (I'm afraid I can't remember who now; whoever you are,
you know who you are! :-) ) who'd built a gadget for doing this. One of
the most interesting aspects (if I remember right) was that he was
presenting the two images in alternation to _different_ eyes yet managing
to elicit a depth percept from people who claimed not to have stereo
vision.
