I think you may want to look at used cameras from another era, or...
These new, cheap(ish) point-and-shoot cameras are not intended
for people who want to know about photograpy (i.e. non-adjustable
or self-adjusting) and they are cheap because they are "electronic."
You can put an electric switch in much ceaper than a receptacle
for a cable release. You'll also probably note that if you were
to ask about a cable release in places that sell these cameras
exclusively, you would not find one and probably not find someone
who knew what you were asking about.
Finding the electrical contacts or access to them on some cameras
is not too hard. If you felt uncomfortable doing it, someone
with some electronic experience could easily do it for you.
The problem is more a physical one - how do you get the camera body
apart? Is it glued? Will everything fall out if I separate
the body parts?
There have been some posts on this list giving specific instructions
on how to "twin" a pair of Nikon Lite-Touch cameras. Should be
in the archives - or maybe Ed Comer still has a copy.
Those cameras are small enough that the stereo base is not much
wider than your eyes - so what you get in "normal" shots is a
greater sense of depth. The advantage of a pair of cameras is
that for shots of things farther away, you CAN exaggerate the
depth and achieve that "special" effect to see the relief in
a ravine, etc.
And, you get the wider aspect ratio of full frame 35mmm.
Your film cost will double but other possibilities will
be available - such as having prints made which are totally
off from each other in terms of brightness, contrast and
colour balance. "Rapid Photo" is a make-money system, not
a precision photographic service.
If you have slides mounted, you can preview your stereo shots
crudely before removing them from the mounts to remount them
better.
yadda, yadda, yadda...
