I think there is an important distinction between JUDGING depth and
SEEING depth. I can easily judge depth with one eye closed, based on
my knowledge of how big things are, and on other visual clues.
However, I can only see depth with both eyes open.
There's a View-Master demo reel which contains a slide that shows two
versions of the same photo of a woman's face. On the left side, the
image is mono and black and white. On the right, it's full color and
stereo. The stereopsis is very obvious and striking when this image
is viewed.
