Basic Question - What do I look for?

If this were to come up on some of the other groups, it would start a minor
discussion, then to disagreement, then to some name calling and finally to a
minor war. Hopefully, it won't happen here.

I have been monitoring this group for a couple of weeks and finally decided
to ask:

I am thinking about adding to my systems a stereo system. Asking a retailer
re: this leads to everything from 'You need the audio store down the street'
to 'They don't make the film for it anymore' to 'We don't sell it because it
isn't made anymore, but check the (pawn shop, used camera dealer, Shutterbug).

While the last is actually reasonable advise, the problem is that I don't
know what to look for in terms of equipment.  I will want something,
reasonable in $ terms, won't go obsolete (more obsolete?), and will be
usable by myself and my son (9 yrs old).

We shoot primarily nature, landscapes, and anything that looks interesting.
I shoot primarily XP2 and Tech Pan in neg. and Agfa RSX in transparency.
Soon I will be adding Scalia 200 to the transparency list.

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
