My recommendation is the FED because it is autoexposure and will
be easier for your 9 year old to use. The FED is made in the
former Soviet Union, in Ukraine. They cost $250 to $400, depending
on where you get them and whether they have been completely adjusted,
reconditioned, and converted to Western batteries. Be sure to get
it from a reputable dealer who will give at least a limited
warranty. I've had one for two years and it is my preferred 
camera. I use it more than my first stereo camera, a Kodak.
