RE: George (DrT) and Allan debating whether format was chosen
artistically, and George said rightly that engineers did it. And
mentions 'BobH' for history?
Yes the Leica design was not the first 35mm, as several cameras
preceeded it, but all used long loads and took the standard movie
frame of 18x24. Barnack of Leica with the 1913 prototype, put two of
these frames together and thus was our 'standard 35mm frame born".
Henceforth we call the original movie frame half-frame and they in
revenge call ours 'double-frame'. (If you want to see me in 1980
holding the original Barnack Leica UR-Leica, not a replica, go to
http://www.loop.com/~hellione/dads.html )
Edison went to G. Eastman needing film for his movie camera and
they split and perforated a current production roll film that
happened to be 70mm, the current width of 120/620, but had earlier
versions like 124. So 35mm resulted. Bell and Howell became famous by
making a perforator that dominated the industry, so all the film had
the B&H perf. they went on to make cameras...even our TDC VIVID
as TDC Co. was a division of B&H formed prewar to make 3d stuff
for 1939 NY World's Fair...early polarized projection as Land had
just invented the polarzing sheet, which sold to military in WW2 and
made the company. When those sales fell off, he designed the instant
camera when his daughter asked why you had to wait so long to see
your pictures after taking them. BobH
