Yup - plus the fact that sometimes people use TABS in their
documents and since there is no uniform expectation of where they
will be placed (but normally either 8 or 10 characters) it's just luck
if the receiver has the message spaced correctly. The best thing to
do is to expand tabs to actual spaces before transmission, and then
have a statement that things look best using a mono-spaced font ((like
Courier or Monaco - neither of which I like very much) - or - use
a Mime complient mail reader, or generate something like a PDF file.
(Again, none of which is very convenient).
I'm starting to see some web sites which will allow you to retrieve
PDF files and if your browser is correctly configured, will open
the reader so you can preserve the fonts, graphics, and so forth in a
format rich document. I'm anticipating a move towards using .pdf for
this purpose, and have been doing large amounts of experimenting here
on doing pdf conversions. For example, right now I'm converting a 50 page
manual for the Oregon Trail Group on doing Mapping of Emigrant Trails
which involves (naturally enough) large numbers of graphs, drawings, maps,
and table oriented GPS coordinates which otherwise would be quite
difficult to make available for viewing on multiple platforms.
