George's question about sound and stereo slide show cues didn't get nearly
as much attention as rainbows, so I think it's safe to put my two cents in.

My projector isn't very hi-tech, but it works for me. It's a Compco Triad.
I'm done several nature and insect shows, inwhich I have both sound and
narration to accompany the slides. In order to make it all sync together, I
use a four-track cassette player. Tracks one and two are soundtracks for
background, where one is nature sounds and the other is acoustic music.
Track three is the narration, and track four is a voice cue. The audience
hears the first three tracks, but the fourth is heard only by the
projectionist via headphones.
As the show starts, the projectionist hears the countdown, and is then cued
when the BG music is ready to start. A vocal cue happens a few seconds
before it's time to switch to the next slide, and this goes on throughout
the presentation. Regarding the two background tracks, these are faded in
and out to coincide with what's on the screen. Sometimes I also accent this
with a live mike by switching off the narration or one of the BG tracks.

The advantage of this system is that it will work with any projector, as
it's simply a verbal cue to change the slide. Automation and exact cueing is
great, just out of my reach from my pocketbook!
