Submarine Stereo
After completing a small purchase at Radio Shack yesterday, I asked
the young man who was helping me if he knew anyone who was involved
with Stereo Photography (trying to get names of those who might be
interested in the Stereo Club that George and I are starting in the
Cleveland area).
To my surprise, his response was "Yes Me". He told me that he was in
the photography group aboard a Submarine and his group took stereo
photos through the submarine's periscope. He continued to describe
how they controlled the distance intervals between exposures as the
submarine moved. Sounds very similiar to the methods for topographical
mapping from an airplane as has been described several times in the
past year and the many recent postings of passengers taking photos
from planes(another version of the "shoot and shift" technique).
He had other customers come in while we were talking hence we could
not spend any more time. He had told me that he probably could not
participate in a club at this time as he had two part time jobs and
was attending the local community college. Regardless, I was glad
that I had asked the question as I had never really thought about
Stereo from a Submarine.
Perhaps some of the other Photo-3D readers have experience in this
field and have some interesting stories to tell.
