No, perhaps 50 years too late.  From my viewpoint, stereo views were a form
of consumer passive entertainment.  The Realist stereo camera came out in
1947 and offered for the first time the serious possibility of doing
excellent stereo work with slide color film.  1952-1955 were the peak years
of consumer use of these stereo cameras to record one's own stereo pictures
in full color, something that is at least as exciting (if not more) than
looking at someone else's stereo pictures.

The fact that we can buy these cameras (which have projected present day
values of $1000 or more) for only $100 is a reason to be happy that we are
in 1996 and not 1896 or 1952.  More public recognition and support is still
missing but I see things getting better with time.
