Other flashes w/Nimslo?

Hi all,
 
A friend of mine who is Internet impaired has asked me to post this question
to the group.  Is it possible to use a 3rd party flash with the Nimslo?
The Optilite flash for the Nimslo has three terminals, where a regular
flash has only two.  He's tried his Metz flash with it with no luck and
he suspects he has to somehow connect that third terminal to make it
work.  Can any of our Nimslo experts out their shed some light on
this??  Thank you in advance!
