I'd expect slaves to be "edge triggered" such that it takes a fast *change*
to trigger it. This way ambient doesn't affect it so long as the sensor itself
remains in it's active area of operation (and timed so that a fluorescent lamp's
flicker doesn't trigger it). So they could be quite sensitive
if wanted to be w/o costing much different (even if priced very different).

Of course, radio-operated "slaves" could go around corners w/o ambient
light problems. :-)

P.S. - I wonder if anyone has ever set up a circular "domino" effect with
flashes and slaves (say, around a football field where there could be
some distance between each sequentially). You could then photograph
the entire football field by opening the camera lens and having them fire
around and around as many times as it takes with a flash-meter in the
center of the field (where it may take a while to "fill"). "Wave flashes" :-)
