I can't say if it is normal functioning of the shutter or
not, but can add the same thing has happened to me. My
first three rolls of stereo slides were taken with a
borrowed Revere before I bought my own stereo camera.
The 2nd of the three rolls came back nearly 100% clear
(except for the sprocket areas and a couple partial and
very faint images.) The camera was returned to its owner
before I even got home to have the film processed, so I
had no chance to experiment to track down the cause.
I did eventually come to suspect it had something to do
with the shutter being stuck open while I rewound the film.
