slide bar alternative

In response to Harold Baize's idea, here's an approach that works well for
me at home for table-top use: I mount my camera on a small tripod and put
the tripod on a small sheet of heavy cardboard. Then I butt a ruler against
the back edge of the cardboard, and tape the ruler to my tabletop. I can
then slide the piece of cardboard back and forth along the ruler, thus
moving the tripod and camera in the process. Using the ruler makes taking
precise notes on lens separation easy, too.
I went this route even after shelling out for one of those classy Jasper
Engineering slide bars. I feel more comfortable with the control and
stability I get with a "slide mat" instead.
