A few comments:
1) This is a remarkably polite, friendly, and helpful list - I've never
heard of another list that's as good in these respects.
2) Most of the posts contain useful information. Sure there's a lot of
"chatting", but at least some chatting contributes to the friendly
atmosphere.
3) I can handle the current traffic, at least for the time being, even
though it *is* somewhat inconvenient. But I know three or four people
who are interested in 3D, and I can't honestly recommend this list to them
because the volume's too high for someone who's not already a
"true believer". Of course, with >1000 recipients already, maybe this
list doesn't *need* any new subscribers. :-)

I'd prefer that the stereo computer graphics be kept on this list rather
than split off, but the preference isn't very strong. If it were split off,
I suspect the volume on that topic would shoot way up, and it would be
more about how to use such-and-such a commercial package and less about
basic theory and technology.
>So what do we do here, if anything?
Don't know. :-)
Maybe ask people to voluntarily cut down a little on the chat at times of
high traffic?
Maybe add a very elementary, low-volume list just for explaining 3D to
beginners? (I'm thinking of a place for beginners to post questions,
for our experts to answer them, and periodic postings of simple FAQs/tutorials
for beginners. That might be a very valuable service for 3D in general,
and it would meet one of my needs - introducing 3D to friends and people I
meet who are casually interested.)

PS: I have tremendous respect for those who serve in an administrative
capacity for this list.
