splitting list

  • From: P3D Peter Abrahams <telscope@xxxxxxxxxx>

The moderator of a list, like a club president, has responsibilities and
obligations. The list or club members have an obligation to make sure
that the tasks are not unnecessarily difficult. For example, clubs I
belong to make two officers sign each check, require quorums larger than a
typical turnout, require club approval for minor decisions, etc.
Here we have a case where a moderator is saying, there is too much traffic,
not only are many/most of those leaving the list doing it for that reason,
but moderator duties take longer than subscriber reading & it is too much
for this moderator.
It seems that either traffic will be reduced or a new moderator will be
found. There's nothing wrong with moderator turnover, but try to imagine
poring over every post, and remaining more dispassionate than many among us
are. The p3d'ers who might be most willing to take on a huge time drain
could well be the more committed, opinionated members, many of whom have
flown off the handle in the past (without even being in the catbird seat
and drawing fire.)
I think that the moderator has announced that the work load is too much.
Readers who want to give the job a try should e-mail him. If no one does,
or if respondents seem inappropriate, we should give serious consideration
to keeping this tenure as lengthy as possible.

And....if you want to keep your mail just like it is, just subscribe to all
groups.
