Delurking
After lurking for at least a year, I guess it's safe to
venture out and communicate with the P3D at large.
First, a couple thoughts about splitting the group and
the sizes of postings:
I am in favor of keeping P3D together. I have diverse
interests in regard to stereoscopy, hence I have gained
much from the widely varying topics discussed on the list.
As has been noted several times, topics which do not
interest can easily be skipped. There are often times
when I am unable to read any digests and catching up
can be a real challenge...so I may not pay as much
attention to all the details offered in a particular
thread. I keep a collection of excerpts containing
bits of information which I feel will be of future
interest and refer to that when needed.
Some time ago there was discussion of the use of
laminating machines for sealing heat-seal masks.
Someone mentioned using the unit offered at the
office supply warehouse outlets. I tried this unit
and found that the slide was too thick to easily
make it through the roller and also that the
amount of time through was too long, resulting
in melted chips.
Well, during the annual shopping frenzy period I
came across a laminator in the toy secton of a
local discount type outlet (Caldor), that was
marked as clearence at ~$14. I decided to give
it a whorl. Again there was a problem with the
slide thickness (both at the heating plates and
the rollers). I shimmed the plates to allow easy
passage through the heating plates and shaved some
of the plastic off the bearing holes for the top
roller. Also, the rollers are manually operated
so one can zip the slide through fairly quickly
so the chips don't melt.
Well...this toy laminator does a nice job sealing
the slides with much less effort then that required
with an iron. I don't recall the brand name of said
laminator but can dig that up for those with interest.
