I'm curious, are you placing the slide in anything, or simply running
it naked through the laminator?  I always use a teflon-coated card stock
foldover around my slides.  They came with the laminator.

Also, the more expensive laminators allow you to adjust the thermostat.
I adjusted mine by turning it down 1/4 turn at a time to the point where 
it just failed to seal the mount, then turned it back up slightly, so
it's applying no more heat than absolutely necessary.  I've never melted
a chip.
