This is probably true. The Sphinx has spent much of its time buried in 
sand (which protects the surface from the wind and people). In 
modern times, it has been exposed to blowing sand (think sand-blasting), 
acid rain, air pollution, souvenier hunters, and several misguided 
attempts at restoration that resulted in worse deterioration. 

Back on the 3D subject...

It sounds like you found a GREAT collection, Bob. I collect antique 
stereoviews (the cards). They are a wonderful way to spur research into 
history and show many details that don't make their way into history 
books. I am afraid that if I ran across such a collection at a good 
price I'd be adding yet another medium to my collection.
