Sphinx Erosion?

I'm not an Egyptologist nor an archaeologist, but if I'm not
mistaken, the Sphinx spent most of that 4,000 plus years buried in
the sands, uncovered in early 1800's (?).  Also, in WWII, it was
used as an artillery target.  That makes for rapid erosion.
