Pot-Belly Bulbs

Hi, Kevin!

I have a Compco Stereo 500 that hasn't had any trouble with blowing
lamps. The "pot-belly" phenomenon is usually a sign of overheating. Is
the blower working, and, if so, are all the ventilation holes clear?

I've never heard of "WIKO" lamps; I got a couple of CZA lamp
replacements a while back from an estate sale, but they are GE's, which
are a standard brand that behaves reliably. Try to find Sylvania, GE,
or Westinghouse lamps if your ventilation blower system seems OK.

The projector has some design flaws, but I like it because it is quieter
than the TDC's. Because the slide carrier action was so stiff that it
would require two hands to change a slide (one to hold down the
projector to keep it from tilting, and the other to operate the slide
carrier!), I modified it to use a spare TDC stainless-steel carrier (the
kind used in the 750-watt model 716's) and painted the inside of the
hood black. Now it works rather well for home use; I only wish the
focusing mechanism didn't have so much "play" in it -- the interior flex
cable and the hood track aren't well engineered. The lenses,
brightness, and uniformity are very good, however, and the polaroids are
located where I like them -- between the slide carrier and the lenses,
which eliminates the depolarizing film base problem discussed in the
"Projector from Hell" thread on this listserv. It is much smaller and
lighter in weight than the TDC's, also. Hope you get it to work for you!
