Re: Shooting people in stereo (strangers)

Larry, I appreciate your concern for my well-being but, as I said, I will
take my chances. There are many dangers around us and we are not, or
cannot be, properly insured for all of them.
Imagine this (true) story: I am taking stereo pictures of my children
playing outside McDonald's. One little 4 year old girl is playing with
them. She ends up in several of my pictures. So, I run inside to
find her parents. While they are eating their hamburger and greasy fries
I explain to them that I am an amateur photographer who it taking
stereo pictures of my children at play. Their daughter just happened
to be in some of the pictures. I have a feeling that one of these
pictures might turn out good enough to want to share in slide sharing
circuits or send for slide competitions, to be viewed by 100 people
the most, in a situation where neither I or anyone else will gain any
direct financial gains. I explain that this is a remote possibility
but I want to have all the bases covered. I pull out that release
form and ask them to sign it. I can just imagine looking at me
surprised, not sure what to make of me or my story or my funny camera
for that matter. Most probably they will refuse to sign anything and
I will have to go home and keep these slides in my private collection.
The other option is not to say anything. I am not doing anything wrong
taking pictures of my children at play and if their little daughter
happened to be in the pictures, so much better for her! I got some
good pictures that day. One of them, with my son and the little girl
inside one of those long tubes (lots of stereo effect!), turned out
pretty good and is now circulating in SSA (ssshhh! don't say anything!)
for the enjoyment of other amateurs sharing this exciting hobby.
Life goes on with unknown and unexpected dangers... No amount of
insurance can cover me from all the evils in this world. So, I take
my chances and don't carry any release forms, enjoying my stereo
photography for my own enjoyment, refusing to let that legal crap
make my life more complicated than it already is.
I do appreciate your concern Larry and maybe some people will listen
to you advise and start carrying and using release forms for what
appears to be "innocent" (not financially motivated) personal
photography... but I will not be one of them.
Regards -- George Themelis
