Mounting slides

I've been using the Reel 3d heat seal slide mounts, and have just noticed
recently that the instructions say to have the split side of the mount
towards the back. I had assumed the side with the notches was obviously the
back. Has anyone else used them the "improper" way, and are there any
particular advantages with them having the split towards the back? Thanks-
