Perhaps they are afraid that if the package is too small, people will
not be able to find it amongs all the clutter on the shelves?  They
are not the only ones "guilty" of this practice; many "Walkman"-style
personal stereos now come blister-packaged with a large cardboard
header, taking up far more area than warranted by the tiny product
within.

Many retailers actually encourage such packaging designs as a way to
thwart shoplifters (remember the CD "longbox"?).

Personally I found the packaging rather attractive and unusual.
