Pix of Stuff

I read with interest the comments here about photographing art stuff,
especially at an art fair. I have had enough art lessons from
various artists to know that some are very "attached" to their work.
Perhaps the best way to photograph it is to buy it and then
photograph it until you run out of film.

Some artists do have the notion that if you photograph it, you will
make a 16 x 20 enlargement of it and sell it as your own. HOWEVER, I
have founf that if you get to know the artist and they understand why
you want a picture of their material, they usually will tell you to
go ahead and photograph to your heart's content. You could always
try the tact of giving them copies of their work for their portfolios.

I have seen some work at art fair I want a copy of for my files, so
to speak. And, when I talk with the artist, I realize they are the
"nervous" type and not the type to let one photograph. So I walk
away and get out my 200 mm lens. A Painting is two-dimensional. I
admit I love to do portraits but it is two-dimensional. Sculpture,
or wood carving IS three-dimensional. If the artist is local, a tact
here might be to invite them to the next club meeting (whether you
took pictures or not) so they would have a better idea of what you do
with a camera. Talk to them about entering pictures of their work
in the next competition. Let them know that when the slide is shown,
their name will be used as the source. Artists that go from fair to
fair trying to sell enought to pay the rent, etc., will appreciate
the exposure. AND, artists love to see other "artists" work. And,
aren't all of us "stereo photographers" artists?

Rather than just going up to their booths and start your camera
working, you need to take time to sell yourself and your work to them.

Good luck.
