Sure, sure. Seriously though George, that is the same reaction I got
when I first saw them this past summer. It almost seems like another
dimension! Of course it's not only the size of the images themselves
that makes it so appealing since 3D projection takes care of that
aspect. Rather it's the clarity of the images also. It was mentioned
awhile back that medium format cameras can be had second hand for
relatively cheap but so far haven't seen any around my local yet.
As Victor Varela had eloquently stated (P3D #1885) how great it is,
especially landscapes. I have no doubt this is true. It would have
helped in some of the shots I had taken of the majestic mountains rising
behind the pine trees viewed from the seashore. This was taken with
a 35mm SLR sidestepping and didn't help reduce the cardboard effect
even though the picture was exposed correctly. This can also be seen
(cardboard effect) with cheaper cameras in closeups. Thus not only
does medium format give a better sense of realism due to size but also
due to clarity or better resolution and helps in distance shots. No
hyper needed or required. :-)
As for it being a well kept secret I don't think so. It's a matter of
the inconvienance factor. Just as 35mm with a Realist serves a function
in a specific purpose, so does a Argus or medmium format. No one format
is perfect, they all have their drawbacks and advantages. It's a matter
of weighting was is important for the application on hand.
