I sometimes wonder if it might represent an effort to turn broadcast 3D into
intellectual property. Some of the glasses have notices printed on them like:
  "Notice: these glasses are licenced only for the viewing of Stupidvision(TM)
   3-D television broadcasts. No other use is permitted. If you use them to
   watch our competitor's Foolishvision(TM) broadcasts, we'll have you thrown
   in jail and confiscate your television set. And don't even think of folding
   the earpieces backward to reverse the lenses."

...or words to that effect. Of course, that's not as bad as the patenting
of common human DNA sequences, which is being done now ("we're sorry, but
you have to pay for an insulin license, or we'll have a judge issue a cease
and desist order against your pancreas").
