Who is Dan Symmes?

Recently Marvin Jones posted a message quoting a message from Dan Symmes:

I haven't heard of Dan before and am therefore interested to know
where he fits into the whole 3D puzzle - why does he know so much
about 3D film and video and in what areas did he contribute.

I did a quick net search but could only find one reference to Dan.
