I've heard this myself, but used a beamsplitter for several years, 
delighted with the results, and never noticed any "distortions." 
Maybe the distortion is reversed in the two sides of the 
image with the result that there is a depth warp of some kind, but 
I could just never see it. IMHO, it's not much to worry about.
