film contrast

Is film contrast directly related to film latitude? For instance
Kodachrome has a latitude of 1/2 stop and will lose major detail at -4
stops (black shadows). Agfa Scala b/w film has alatitude of 1 & 1/2 stops
and will lose major detail at maybe 6 or 7 or 8 stops. This compression of
exposure range in the Kodachrome leads to less grey scale range ( I'm using
grey scale terminology because it's easier to understand) . Now the
question is: Is this loss of grey scale range directly related to the
objective apearance of contrast? A limited grey scale could look 'snappier'
but would have less gradations.
