View-Master is very much aware of this problem and the fact that
children under age 5 (generally speaking) cannot view the images in
stereo. They began development of a viewer with closer interocular
spaceing a few years ago but it never came to fruition. Perhaps this
is because the reel may have to become a bit smaller make use of the
closer spacing.
At any rate, this has become a bit of challenge to them and I'm sure
this was in the back of their mind when they developed the new
View-Master talking viewer (see News about Products on our web site:
http://www.cinti.net/~vmmasell).
There are still a large amount of scenic titles manufactured every year.
These include updates of existing packets as well as new titles (such
as the St. Louis Arch, Oregon Coast Aquarium and Portland, City of
Roses). However, most of these new titles are only available on site.
The person responsible for scenics is Charley Van Pelt (yes, just one
person for the whole country) who has working for View-Master since
1947.
We hope that, with Mattel's interest in nostaliga, that they will want
to re-issue all kinds of old packets or update them, at the very least.
After all, look what they did with Barbi a few years ago. Can see it
now "View-Master Barbie" with her own "mini" viewer. You and your doll
can travel all over the world, together...
We can dream...can't we?
