3D on UK TV
Last night 23/4 the UK TV programme "Wonders of the World " which each week
gives a different person the chance to air their particular wonders of the
world. Featured someone who listed stereoscopic vision as one of his
wonders .The sequence began with shots of people watching an eye max movie
with LCD goggles and showed him using a viemaster.(Actualy the opening
credits for this programme each week show single views through a
viewmaster). Then went on to show a Holmes type antique pair which I was
able to free view ,next they switched to showing the two halves alternately
in rapid succesion to get some idea of depth over to the viewer. This
worked quite well but of course the flicker was disturbing there was a
discussion on the group some time ago about a video system that used this
technique. It would probably be less disturbing on a moving subject than an
otherwise still one. In a previous edition of this programme some listed
the stereo microscope as a wonder and lamented the fact that it could not
be demonstrated on TV. The magic eye books were featured as well and the
guest was of the opinion that stereo vision evolved to overcome natural
camoflage. P.J.Homer
