This was one of my thoughts when I first heard of JPS.
To convert an interlaced 3D image to JPS format would otherwise require
the two fields to be separated and the missing information (lines) to be
interpolated.  Basically redundant information beefing up the size
of the JPS - the interpolation could be done in the viewer.

But as you say it does create compatibility problems with standard
JPEG software like photoshop or other image viewers.

Most of my images are grabbed from underwater stereoscopic video 
cameras and are therefore already in the interlaced format.
