Image Enhancing filters

One of the interesting items that I bought in Detroit last night is a pair
of "Image Enhancing" filters for the Realist. These do some selective
filtration and change colors depending on the color of light. I have a
filter for my SLR that I have never used. In tungsten light they appear
pinkish. In fluorescent light they change to white, greenish. The fellow
who made the Realist filters just cuts smaller sections out of a larger
filter puts it over a Realist filter holder (the small ones that go over
the lenses).
I plan to use the filters and see what they do, but I would like to hear if
anyone has any ideas or comments on the use of these filters. Why and how
do they work?
